Yay, I'm now an accredited quiller with the UK quilling guild! (Find out more about the accreditation scheme here).

Words fail to describe how delighted I was when I received the confirmation email from Genevieve (the accreditation officer) few days ago. I told a friend of mine - 'it feels very much like when one's research manuscript is being accepted for publication by a reputable journal'. I'm not exaggerating, I certainly felt so.
This year is my forth year being a member of the UK Quilling Guild. Since I teach and demo the art of quilling to our local community, I thought of challenging myself a step further. Thus I applied to attempt for the basic accreditation scheme November last year. Shortly after that, I received a few documents from the accreditation officer which include a letter stating my candidate number (to be used throughout the assessment as a precaution for anonymity), a note on accreditation criteria, a grid for quilling techniques sampler and quilling terminology sheets for reference. As I'm living away from the UK, all communications were done online. It was really convenient and prompt.

Since then I kept my head down, working on my basic techniques (for part A), and also trying to come out with something original as I planned to submit only a piece of quilling work to fulfill the requirements of part B. An accreditation candidate is not allowed to discuss the accreditation attempt on social media or with other guild committees except for the accreditation officer, to make sure that anonymity is maintained throughout the process.

Part A - sampler

I began working on Part A sometime around February this year. I did it intentionally slow, tackling one category at a time so it took me 1-2 weeks to complete something which one could normally complete in few hours. For part B, it took me several weeks to research and explore ideas before finally deciding on the theme that I wanted to work on - The Four Gentlemen Among Flowers. Once I had the theme decided, the entire quilling process became more structured, as I had things to focus on eg. to study the features of the plants, to think of which techniques to apply, and the arrangement of the work etc.

Then something unexpected happened. I am actually expecting my second child and I experienced early contractions during my 2nd trimester earlier in March and there was a concern of preterm labour. So I was advised to rest and was on hormone for months. I only started working on the project in mid April, beginning with sketch, then doing the actual quilling. I worked on the project bit by bit everyday as I couldn't sit for long hours. At one point I was concerned that I might not be able to complete the work to post them to UK in time (they had to arrive by 31st May) that I was seriously considering postponing my accreditation attempt. But through perseverance and some good luck, I managed to complete everything and posted them out on time.

close up - orchid

Personally, I feel that the idea development and writing down of the working notes are the most challenging tasks for me as I don't usually record down how I do my quilling pieces. The requirement is that another quiller should be able to reproduce the work just by reading the working notes.

Frankly speaking, I really enjoyed the whole accreditation process. The feeling of focusing whole heartedly and working hard on something that you love doing, and later being recognized technically by more experienced quillers (the guild) is truly satisfying. Apart from that, I found the score sheet and feedback comments from accessors (that came back with the confirmation email) truly valuable especially for a self-taught quiller like me. They provide useful insights/ advises on how to improve one's techniques further and what to work on there after. I appreciate their effort in scrutinizing each shapes and quilling pieces in close details in a very professional way.
It is indeed a pleasant 'gift' just in time as I'm about to give birth next month. My baby has been actively 'involved' in the entire process - kicking hard when I was quilling. Who knows he will become a quiller in future too!

Last but not least, I thank the quilling guild for the effort in running this accreditation scheme, and also to Genevieve the accreditation officer for her help throughout my accreditation process. Though I couldn't make it to receive my certificate in person this time but I do hope I would be able to attend the guild's annual display and meeting in UK someday.

P/S: A note to anyone who plans to attempt accreditation in the near future is to pay extra attention to the packaging/wrapping of the quilling pieces that will be sent by post/mail. Choose very sturdy materials that could provide good protection to your work or you'll risk part of your work arrived crushed/ damaged like in my case. Luckily the accessors took this into consideration but still it's best not to risk as it would affect the assessment itself.

I tried to make a card a day, or every alternate day, not limiting myself to quilling only, but also trying out other card making techniques. I feel like pushing myself out of my comfort zone, to try out working with pattern papers, or brads or dies or stamps etc. Also I try to challenge myself to try colour palettes or sketches that I don't normally feel comfortable to work with.

I like some of the cards better than the others, but the purpose of the challenge is not to produce only pretty cards. It is meant to explore different techniques and push myself out of my comfort zone. So I treat them as experiments. There's no right or wrong, just more effective or less attractive. Gonna squeeze my creative juice harder!

I wanted the card to complement the gift but with a touch of 'softness', so I chose blue colour and metal brads, and also made a quilled rose using the technique called "reversed rose".

I first came across these "reverse roses" from Motoko Nakatani's Instagram.

After admiring the beauty of these roses for weeks, I finally got to sit down and experiment a bit with these roses. I have no idea how the roses are made as there are no instructions or info about it online, so I just experimented based on my interpretation of the photos.

Here's my first few attempts (clock wise starting from the beige and lastly the purple).

Basically, I used two strips to make each rose. The strips were placed side by side. I started off by making a small coil - like the usual rolling except you have two strips glued together on one end. This becomes the center of the rose. Then I used my fingers to loop and wrap the strips around the small coil - the action is kind of similar to how you perform alternate side looping, just that it goes round and round to form a coil, and the looping has to go to and fro to achieve the look of the petals of roses. I applied dabs of glue here and there in between to prevent the roses from disseminating.
I personally feel that using two strips of different colours, one darker one lighter, give better contrast to the petals of the roses. Also, for the anniversary card, I added some irregular wheatears and shaped marquises to give the rose a more realistic view. (Up close details of the rose can be seen on my IG here.)

If you have a different way of doing it, or any better idea of doing this, please feel free to drop me a comment!
I had to say I agree with her totally. As the saying goes 'practice makes perfect', it is always good to practice (but I personally feel practice doesn't necessarily make perfect but it does make improvement)

In reality, however, sometimes we are too occupied with daily tasks that 30 minutes of quilling a day might seem a luxury to many of us. I haven't been using a needle tool to roll my strips for quite some time (have been doing on edge quilling and also just using slotted tool) so I decided to give it a go yesterday and I found out that my fingers have forgotten how to waltz with the needle.

So I made a resolution for 2017, to do a bit of quilling practice every alternate day, even if it's just for 5-10 minutes, starting from yesterday. Wish me perseverance in keeping to this goal!

By the way, I saw many interesting and outstanding Valentine's Day artwork on social media this month but too bad I myself didn't have time for any project as I'm busy preparing for the new semester that start end of February. I'm doing a part time lecture job at a local private university, apart from my usual tuition job. Still, I managed to make a few simple tags for my colleagues at our tuition center, attached to some chocolates to brighten up their day.
Really sorry for the long silence and absence over here but if you do follow me on Insta (papernquill), you'll notice that I have been exploring and posting quite regularly over there.

Apart from my daily jobs, I am also actively involved in promoting quilling and paper crafts since 2016. I picked up calligraphy and Zentangle too. And of course, looking after my boy who will turn 3 this year, and those fatty succulents that I grow. I started writing for a column in a Chinese website myeasymoment.com to introduce about paper art and craft. So it's a brand new challenge for myself too.

For 2017, I shall begin with my latest work: a rooster.

The rooster is designed as a combination of both picture and Chinese word "雞”. It's possible because Chinese characters are hieroglyphics. I spent about 3 days making this piece, starting from sketching the design to putting the strips in place. It was rather challenging as there are a lot of strokes, bents and curves in the word itself.

I myself was pretty satisfied with the outcome, so I thought why not turned it into a Chinese New Year greeting card. I decided to just snap a photo and create a reprint of the original quilling work to save time as the lunar new year was just around the corner. A graphic designer friend of mine saw the piece and was interested with the idea so we cooperated it as our personal project. Once the design was finalised, we began to print it out and sent them to our friends and customers.

What started as an experimental project turned out well received among our friends. I was even invited to go live on a local radio station and the card was also featured on a local newspaper.

Last but not least, since it's the 10th day of the lunar new year, I wish everyone a happy and auspicious year ahead!
Too bad I was busy with CNY and my boy (he was down with fever + flu + cough, the full package) so I only managed to make a very simple valentine's day project.
It has been almost 7 months since I last updated.

The good news is I passed my viva and am awarded a PhD in molecular biology. My convocation is this November and I'm very excited about it. My boy has been growing happily and it's such a joy to see him grow and learn everyday.

Some quilling that I managed to do, upon customers' orders. Hope you enjoy.

Just realised that my last blog post was 5 months ago. But if you have been following me on PnQ's FB page or Instagram, then you'll know that I'm a "little" more active there. Why have I been in silence for the last couple of months? It's because our little one has arrived and I'm busy adapting to my new life as a mum! As much as I'm still following most of the updates about quilling in the cyber world, I have not much time left for myself to do any quilling (sleep becomes my utmost priority). Anyhow, I still manage to took part in a one-day handmade bazaar last December (thanks to hubby for taking care of our boy when I'm busy), producing limited cards for sell. And because of that, I was interviewed by a local press. Thanks to the lovely reporter Patricia for the wonderful INTERVIEW.

Some photos about the bazaar to share:
Hopefully I'll be able to do some quilling and post more often this year as my boy grows. I've gotten my hands on a couple of quilling books last year and my recent entry is "Paper Quilling Chinese Style". Would like to try out some of the techniques and designs when I have time. Till then, have a great year ahead everyone!
While waiting for them to evaluate my work, I have months of free time until I need to worry about my thesis defence, and so I can start experimenting with quilling again!

Firstly, vortex coils! Introduced by Australian quiller Licia Politis. Finally, I get to experiment and practice on how to do it. I love the look of vortex coils especially when it comes to the square shape. Those bigger coils on the left are vortex coils while those smaller ones on the right are normal coils. (for the sake of comparison)
On another random project, I made a simple owl card. The inspiration of the owl actually came from a fabric owl key chain pouch my best friend gave me as souvenir from her Bangkok trip. This is my second quilled owl. I made another quilled owl version years back when I just started quilling.
The following wedding bells are part of a trifold card. It's a customer order which I've promised to not reveal. The order was placed sometime in April and finally it was completed and posted out to customer earlier this month. It will be brought to New Zealand to congratulate a couple on their R.O.M. The main quilling piece is of course not these bells. I was requested to sort of 'merge' 2 zodiac signs into a single quilling design. Quite challenging but it turned out nicely and the customer was happy with it.

And here's another card adapted from a card design in the book "New concept in paper quilling". I love the Kraft card look, with the paper bag element. Instead of using punched flowers as the original design, I made fringed flowers. (Hmm, maybe I'll write a review of all the quilling books that I keep in my collection someday, when I have the energy to do it. Hahaha!)

And last but not least, a cute card for a boy's 1 year old birthday. I don't feel like repeating myself by quilling foot prints, or baby or rocking horse, so instead I came out with this - a boy flying an airplane. I started by sketching the outline of a cartoon version of airplane, and then filling it with quilled shapes. It might not be fantastic, but I think at least it's cartoon-ish. Haha!
I'm not a full time crafter (more of a weekend crafter), and on weekends I have other duties or roles that I have to juggle with. Thus most of the time, I prefer quilling on cards, as they are less demanding - taking the most 2 to 3 hours to complete, yet I get to enjoy the serenity of paper crafting (entering 'quilling zen').

Months ago, I came across a nice ready made photo frame at a local shop that I found 'click' immediately with the 'flower shop' I had in mind. And so I purchased the frame, but no immediate action followed and the frame was left on my bench for weeks. Then when it's almost a week before Mother's day, I thought well maybe I should put the idea into action, and give it as a gift for my mum who are good in flower arranging. So I started making the flower pots, of various sizes and height, using tight coils.

If you have been following my blog closely, you'll know that I ended up giving my mum the carnation card instead of a 'flower shop'. Yes, I procrastinated on quilling the flowers, the pots have been left collecting dust on my craft table for weeks. Until finally one afternoon in the final week of June, I started making the first pot of flower - the daffodils. Then on another day, I quilled the second pot of flower. Then on another day, another pot of flower. And another...
I continued quilling a little a day, taking my time in enjoying the process. Without realising, I completed the flower pots sooner than I imagined.
The 'flower shop' project is a wonderful experience for me. I learnt that if you break things down to smaller achievable tasks and focus on completing each smaller task at a time, big projects/ goals will become less daunting and manageable. Yes, start by attempting a step at a time, and without realising it, you've jogged through the entire journey.

Till then, keep quilling!
Recently, I realised I have some unused 'scrapbooking' craft materials in my storage, so I decided to experiment a bit by incorporating them into my quilling cards.

This one is for a friend who's now overseas chasing her dream - quilling + brad + pattern paper + washi tapes
After discussion with my supervisor, we'll send it out this month for examination after I've done my correction (on my third draft).

Okay, honestly I haven't been quilling at all since my last post although I still follow the updates in quilling world. Now that with my thesis settling soon, I manage to find some time and made these two Mother's Day cards, one for my mom, and the other for my mother in law. I started by sketching the flowers, followed by arranging the quilled shapes to fill up the space. The first card took longer to complete as it involved some adjustments and experimenting. The carnations designs are identical but if you look closely, the shapes and colours of the petals are a little different. Here goes the photos:
I thank my mom for encouraging me to go after my dream - to further my study when I myself was a little doubtful of my own ability. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to graduate this year and wear that bonnet to make her proud. To all mothers out there, Happy Mother's Day! You guys are awesome!
Still I managed to make two cards, one for my mum, and the other for my husband.

Here's the card I made for my mum. She's a lotus flower lover.

And here's the Valentine's card I made for my husband. The wrapped heart is inspired by Licia Politis. I learnt how to make the heart from Ann Martin's blog HERE.
Besides the painstaking thesis writing process and making a few customers' orders in between, I conducted 2 quilling classes, 1 workshop and initiated our first ever quillers-get-together in town.

Here are some photos...
I don't celebrate Halloween but I thought it would be fun to make something in black, orange or purple. So here's something simple that I came up with. Happy Halloween!lulu_mahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07384439935533086388noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6121613048042427866.post-24710777615332637652013-10-14T10:40:00.000+08:002014-06-25T12:53:50.249+08:00Another attempt of QuillographyA signage for a car accessories shop. Made upon customer's request. I was given the freedom to design. So I chose black and red as background colours because they are the colours that first came into my mind when I think about cars. I wanted something classy, so I chose to quill using gold gilded soft ivory strips. Although it's not a very big piece, it's tedious as I used normal standard weight quilling strips for the quilling. I sketched the design and had to make adaptations while quilling. I myself love this piece very much as it's clean and simple. I hope you do enjoy it too.
Been working hard with my thesis. And I have just another chapter to go so hopefully I can get it done by the end of this month. And it's exciting too as my little shop turns 2 this month!
If you are residing in Malaysia, or has a Malaysian postal address,
please join my little shop's 2nd anniversary card-making contest. The

I attended a workshop on traditional Chinese paper cutting - learning from a local expert. He has been involved in paper cutting since young age and he is now almost 70 or more (my guess). You can feel the passion about paper cutting from the way he talked and explained. Here's my lesson 1 outcome.
It is only until I received an order from a customer who wanted a birthday card for a guy who is crazy about motorbikes that I finally get my hands at it. I figured probably I'd give it a try on Harley since it's like 'Gucci' or 'Prada' in motorbike world (I believe). So I researched a bit on the internet as I've never seen a real Harley and came out with this simplified version
Here's a recent card I made - a customer order for a girl who turns 18. I was given the freedom to design, with an only requirement -pastel colours. And I happened to come across a nice stamped card on Pinterest, which I love a lot, so I decided to make a simplified quilled version. (p/s: Just curious how many of you also find your inspiration from Pinterest?)

Here's the pinned photo

And here's another piece of quilling to share - quilled family. I have always loved 'The Setka Family by Cheryl of A Paper Life. So many things happened lately that I feel family support is very important. Family keeps us going and I'm thankful for having family members who really care for me. I'll try my very best to provide support too, to be a good family member.

And some exciting news to share - I have just recently decided to become a member of the quilling guild! Yay!!!!! I really enjoy quilling and hope to spread the love for quilling too. Our quilling with the community project using shredded recycled strips at the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre has also been featured on the guild's members only blog. Another Yay! Find out more about the Quilling Guild here http://quilling-guild.weebly.com/index.html
If you are a fans of Monster Inc., this one is something like a prelude to it. There were a lot of kids with their parents when we watched the movie. Although it might look like a movie for kids, as an adult, I really enjoyed it. It's very colourful, funny and it reminds me of my good old days in campus when I did my degree. Most importantly, it inspires me. It takes great courage for one to chase after her dream, but it takes even greater courage for one to be true to herself, to accept that she is not perfect, yet can still pursue a dream. So here's my tribute to Mike Zawosky of Monster University.
After seeing Jacky Huang's quilled 'dream big' on Ann Martin's blog, I immediately fall in love with this type of quillography.
No.1
I met local artist Mr Gerald Goh during SBC Biodiversity Day. Mr Goh is also the managing director of Sarakraf.
He was invited as one of the judges for the colouring and also pottery
colouring contests. His children were with me at the make and take
quilling session. While the children were quilling, he was there
observing. And he bought a set of quilling tools and some paper supplies
from me before he left. He also bought some of my quilling cards. Few
days later, he came up with this

A quilled Hornbill. The Hornbill is the symbol of the place that I live in - Sarawak. Sarawak is called the land of Hornbills. So you can see the motifs of hornbills in a lot of our native crafts eg. weaving, wood carving etc. Mr Goh paints with oil paints and acrylic paints. So his creation has some oil painting feeling to it. This is his first piece of quilling work and he didn't even have to sketch before he quill! I guess for some people, it's just in the blood. He told me that he actually quite enjoy the process of rolling, and it's really addictive. He had to forbid himself for bringing it back home (he did the quilling at his centre).

He has also set up a quilling corner in the Colonial Chinese Museum Gallery in his centre. Yeah, those are my quilling cards. Very simple cards but I made them with love.

No 2.
One of my earliest quilling class students is an art student
majoring in graphic design. She had chosen paper quilling to work on for her final year
project. Few days ago she told me that her work has been selected for display to public and so I
was invited to the exhibition. She actually utilises paper quilling and
paper sculpture to illustrate the story of mooncake/mid autumn
festival. Furthermore, paper quilling was also incorporated into product
packaging design - for the boxes of the mooncakes.
